Ballast shear effects on the dynamic response of railway bridges

Single-track railway bridges are susceptible of experiencing high levels vertical acceleration on the deck that may be dangerously accentuated at resonance. This is especially critical for short-to-medium span simply supported bridges. problem can compromise safety trains and increase maintenance costs track. The main objective this work to investigate influence ballasted track dynamic behaviour these structures. present contribution provides a detailed sensitivity analysis over wide single-track bridge catalogue covering lengths from 10 25 m considering two common structural typologies: girder-deck slab-deck effect stiffness neoprene bearings also evaluated. A 2D Finite-Element track–bridge interaction model implemented used analyse modal parameters, harmonic response under train passages. Additionally, weak coupling exerted by studied structures with an increasing number consecutive spans. results obtained reveal notable mobilised ballast shear transfer mechanism structures, shortest girder Finally, existing short conventional line updated predict experimental measured operating conditions. adequacy numerical tool parameters shown.
